og-home restoration is a way to preserve our heritage — to find and restore abandoned homes and cabins that date back to the 1950s and earlier. These structures are usually in pretty bad shape; many times they’re just razed and salvageable boards, purlins, and trusses can be used as reclaimed wood in other homes.
There are dedicated people, however, who seek out these homes and spend years restoring them to habitable houses. Professional companies such as Heritage Restorations, which worked on the Mitchell dog-trot cabin (p. 46), bring up-to-date restoration techniques and ideas to each project, and the result is an improvement over the original design.
Another remarkable story involves the Briggs family (p. 44). We met Barbara and her daughter at a log-home show in Albuquerque a couple of years ago, and they told us of their adventures moving a condemned home built in 1830 from Ohio to their property in New Mexico. The challenges they overcome, from straightening warped wood to finding these structures in the first place, is quite a tale.
Log-home restoration is also a practical matter for homeowners. Most times, costly log replacement can be avoided by simple maintenance. Sometimes, however, an accident may prompt you to replace a few logs, and we’ll give you some ideas on how to handle the job. Corrections: The “Natural Philosophy” home in the May issue (p. 62) was built in Idaho. Also, in our Cozy Cabins issue,
pricing on the Gastineau cabins starts at $37,300.
Custom Wood Homes design guide: Our sister publication, Custom Wood Homes, has been covering hybrid/green/natural materials homes for a year and a half. In early July, it will launch its first Design Guide, which will introduce readers to the rapidly-expanding world of custom home design. You’ll find stories on architectural styles and trends, favorite plans from top producers, and incredible photography. Look for the Custom Wood Homes Design Guide 2008, on sale in early July (also available on our web site).
