Mold and mildew. Mold and mildew are unsightly and they provide a comfortable place for other fungi to grow. Brown, black, green, or orange stains on logs are from mold and mildew. If your logs have over 20 percent moisture, they are sus-

ceptible to mold and mildew. Homes in humid climates are more vulnerable to mildew than those in dry climates. Check joints between logs, corners, and shaded areas—these dry less rapidly than those in other places.
What to do: Logs do fine if they are allowed to dry after a rain, but if you see fungi in an area, the logs there are staying wet too long. Trim overhead trees to let in more sunlight, check gutters, or be prepared to more regularly apply mildew-cides and water repellents.

Cleanliness. Dirty logs can lead to moisture retention.
What to do: Every two years, your logs should be cleaned to remove debris and oxidation. Cleaning will also eliminate any mold and mildew. Even logs that have weathered to gray (assuming you don’t like gray — some people do) can be restored to their fresh-cut beauty with a good cleaning. Consult your log producer to make sure whatever cleaning or restoring solution you use is compatible with the preservative and finish on your logs.
