While touring models homes, the Henkes realized they wanted their master bedroom to be located in an open loft (left and below).

Putting the “wow” in prow

When collecting data from the last few years of home sales, Jay Parmeter, co-owner of Golden Eagle Log Homes, calculated that about one-fourth of homes all Golden Eagle log homes sold have a prow wall window included in the plan. “People love the 3-D effect a prow can give you,” he says. “The panoramic view is extended beyond the normal 180-degrees and gives the room a very open feel.”

Although they can add $5,000 to $15,000 to the bottom line, this architectural feature holds its value over time and will be a selling point in the future.

A few tips from experts: Use Rain-X glass coating on the outside and inside to keep the view clear and spot free. Also, consider extending the roofline at the point of the prow to shade the interior during the summer months (also known as passive cooling).

“I think the experiences I’ve had during the planning and building process helps me guide people through the sometimes-tricky path through home construction,” says Kevin, who became a sales associate for Golden Eagle. “You can’t be afraid to make changes along the way and possible sacrifice some things in order to get the item that you feel is the most important. For us, the large prow window was worth the adjustments and gave this home the open feel that we wanted.”

The Henke home is often on the Golden Eagle open house tour and the family has had more than 100 people come through the home in one day. “People all seem to say the same thing when they walk in the door: ‘Wow, look at the view!’. I still say the same thing to myself each day,” says Sue. “Not a bad way to live.” CBLH
